Project

City of Williams Lake – South Lakeside Sanitary Trunk

Williams Lake, BC | $260,000 | August – November 2016

RAM undertook a challenging civil construction project, removing and replacing a section of live 525 mm sanitary trunk sewer in the heart of Williams Lake. This involved full bypass pumping to keep the line in service throughout the construction process. The work took place in a busy commercial corridor, complicated by groundwater in the trench and the need to navigate around existing utilities.

In this type of trunk sewer project, shutting off the flow is not an option. Every litre of wastewater produced by the city had to keep moving while the old pipe was cut out and replaced, necessitating careful planning and execution. The flow was pumped around the work, section by section, until the new main was thoroughly tested and successfully tied in. Such deep and live-main work in an occupied corridor highlights how excavation services that draw on extensive experience can significantly impact the project’s success.

HDPE Fusion for the Bypass

HDPE Fusion for the Bypass

Fusing HDPE pipe on site for the bypass line is crucial in civil construction. Butt fusion creates a joint stronger than the pipe itself, which is essential for a temporary main carrying a city’s sewage through a commercial corridor, particularly when it involves a sanitary trunk sewer. This process is self-performed by RAM crews, showcasing our expertise in excavation services.

Shored Trench, Safe Access

Shored Trench, Safe Access

A trench box set with bedding placed and a ladder in the hole is essential for ensuring safety during deep excavation in saturated ground, particularly in civil construction projects. The safety of workers depends significantly on proper shoring and the established methods for crews to enter and exit the site. At a RAM site, it is crucial that nobody enters an unprotected trench, especially when providing excavation services for projects like sanitary trunk sewer installations.

Laser Grade Control

Laser Grade Control

In civil construction, the laser grade control setting invert on the new sanitary trunk sewer is crucial. A gravity sewer must maintain its designed slope throughout its entire run; if this is incorrect, the city will end up with a line that never runs clean, highlighting the importance of precise excavation services.

Working in Groundwater

Working in Groundwater

Saturated ground around a live trunk sewer during civil construction often leads to challenges. Groundwater management involves pumping, filtration, and constant attention to the trench walls, all while ensuring the city’s services remain unaffected upstream of your excavation services.
